Kazuo Wakabayashi

Kobe, Japan 1931

Painter. In 1944, he studied at the Hikone Technical School in Shiga, Japan. Between 1947 and 1950, he attended the School of Fine Arts and the Niki Academy in Tokyo, and the drawing and painting classes by Kanosuke Tamura. Back in Kobe, he prepares to enter the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Tokyo, but abandoned architecture in 1950, turning to painting. In the following year, he joined the Babel group, alongside Rokuichi, Kaibara, Ko Nishimura and others. In 1953, he became a member of the Seiki group and published an album of paintings and poetry, and in 1954 he participated in the Delta, in addition to illustrating the newspapers Shinko Shimbum and All Sports. Between the 1940s and 1960s, he participated in Japanese salons receiving awards in 1947, 1950, 1954 and 1959. In 1961, he moved to São Paulo and became a member of the Seibi Group, presented by Manabu Mabe (1924 - 1997) and Tomie Ohtake (1913). Two years later, he received a gold medal both at the 12th São Paulo Salon of Modern Art and at the 7th Salon of the Seibi Group of Plastic Artists. He is awarded the first prize at the Salão de Abril of the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro - MAM / RJ, in 1966. He participates in several editions of the São Paulo International Biennial, between 1963 and 1967, when he was awarded. In 1992, the book was published Wakabayashi, with a presentation by the critic Jayme Mauricio, and, the following year, Paço das Artes, in São Paulo, presents a retrospective of his work.
