Yuji Tamaki

Fukui, Japan, 1916 - São Paulo, Brazil, 1979

Painter and teacher. In 1932, he immigrated to Brazil, moving to the interior of São Paulo. About two years later, he moved to the capital, where he met the painters Shigueto Tanaka, Yoshiya Takaoka and Tomoo Handa. At the same time, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro to study painting and was supervised by Bruno Lechowski, integrating the Bernardelli Nucleus, composed by the artists Yoshiya Takaoka, José Pancetti, Aldo Makagoli and others.

In 1935, back in São Paulo, he is one of the founders of the Seibi Group and participates in the 3rd Salão Paulista de Belas Artes. In 1937 and 1938, he was awarded at the National Salon of Fine Arts, in Rio de Janeiro. In 1948, he joined Grupo 15, with whom he exhibited at the São Paulo headquarters of the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB) the following year. With the Guanabara Group, he exhibited in 1950, 1958 and 1959. He won prizes at the Salão Seibi, in 1963 and 1964, and exhibited in the 1964 and 1966 editions. Still in 1966, he participated in the exhibition Nipo-Brasileiros Artists, at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da University of São Paulo (MAC / USP). He held solo exhibitions at the Cosme Velho gallery, in 1969 and 1970. Seven years later, he took part in the exhibition Santa Helena Group: Decade 35 to 45, at the Museum of Brazilian Art of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (MAB / Faap). In 1980, a retrospective of his work is held at the Place des Arts gallery, in Rio de Janeiro.
