DORIS HOMANN

German, 1898-1976

Painter, sculptor, draftsman, engraver and ceramist, Doris was born in 1898, in Berlin, Germany, and died in 1976, in São Paulo, Brazil. A figurative artist, she was influenced by surrealism and expressionism. He studied in Berlin at the Konigstatisches Lizeom (Royal Lyceum) and at the Academy of Fine Arts, with masters Martin Brandenberg, Wendel, Willy Jackel and Clovis Corinth. She was part of the circle of artists who gathered around the sculptor and painter Otto Freundlich. She participated in 16 collective and individual exhibitions in Berlin. She became friends with Kathe Kollwitz, George Grocz, Bertholt Brecht, Erwin Piscator, Mayakowisky, Fanny Remak and members of the Bauhaus. Considered a vigorous and promising artist, she lived with Kandinski, August Kuhu Folix, Robertz Martin Breslaner and Franz Inng. She was an anti-Nazi activist, illustrated books and collaborated with Berlnm am Morgen, Die Fran, Die Rote Fahne and the satirical newspaper Der Knnppel. She lived in Rome and Milan, Italy, and in 1948 moved to Brazil, where she held 21 exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. He received several awards.
